Miles Morland Foundation Scholarships for writers of African Heritage: Deadline 31.10.14
The Miles Morland Foundation is a charity which supports culture and education in Africa, particularly the continent’s literature. In recognition of the financial challenges many emerging African writers encounter, MMF is once again offering Morland Writing Scholarships for three writers. Now in their second year, the scholarships provide a grant of £18000, paid to each writer monthly over the course of one year. Only published writers who were either born in Africa or whose parents were both born in Africa are eligible for the scholarship. Applicants must also have had work previously published in a printed book, journal or magazine that has been offered for sale.
To qualify for the scholarship, a candidate must submit a 2000-5000 piece or excerpt of published work written in English, along with a brief description of a new work they intend to write. Each entry will then be evaluated on its literary merit by a panel of judges. On 2014 panel of judges are editor, critic and Chair of the 2014 Commonwealth Short Story Prize judging panel Ellah Allfrey, 2010 Caine Prize winner Olufemi Terry, and novelist Nadifa Mohammed, named on Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists list in 2013.
The Miles Morland Foundation will accept entries until the submission deadline on October 31st 2014. For more information and further details on how to apply for the Morland Writing Scholarship please click here.
