It’s that time of year again, dear reader. Here at Afropean.com, we’re delighted to revive our newfound tradition (est. 2023) of reflecting on the songs and artists that have made our musical year and sharing these gems with our cherished readership. A different playlist from a member of the team will be posted every few days, up to and including the New Year. First out of the gate, we have the choice selections from regular contributor, Nina Camara.

1. Swedish House Mafia & Alicia KeysFinally
NC: I came across this song when playing one of Alicia Keys’ old hits. Considering that it features my other favourite artist, I decided to give it a try. There’s a distinctive piano part which I really like and Alicia’s voice gives this song an extra spark. It is a good track to listen to if you need to pump yourself up.

2. Florrie – The Lost Ones
NC: Florrie is an artist I discovered this year. The Lost Ones is also the name of her first album which she released after a ten year struggle with major record labels, who ended up snubbing her. That’s also the theme of the song; perseverance in difficult times. The record is also full of pop bangers so, although Florrie is a smaller artist, she can compete with big names.

3. Childish Gambino In the Night ft. Jorja Smith & Amaarae
NC: I found this on a Best Album… list and listened to it because I enjoy music by Jorja Smith. The combination of her and Amaarae sounds intriguing. It’s a more relaxed song than the previous two choices, so a nice change of pace. I also like romantic tunes, so this  won me over.

Wishing all our readers much peace and joy this Christmas/End-of-Year season and beyond.
