Preview: ‘I Just Dey Observe’ Nigerian Film Festival @ The BFI, London 18th August 2018
Curator and West African film enthusiast Nadia Denton is determined to show the world that there is more to the Nigerian movie industry than Nollywood. She has traversed Europe in her quest, taking her brainchild Beyond Nollywood from London to Rotterdam.
Denton returns this month with I Just Dey Observe at the BFI; a collection of short features, animation and spoken word from the rising stars of Naija film-making.
In Nylon a mother gives a harrowing account of the death of her young daughter following a freak accident. A snapshot of both joy and devastation in less than eight minutes, the brief but happy life of Esua-Imoh Udobang and the impact of her death is recounted with affection and raw emotion by her rock of a mother, Dorathy. The title derives from the material of the dress Esua-Imoh wore that tragic day, 35 years ago. In essence, Nylon is director WanaWana Udobang’s tribute to her late sister and the fortitude of their mother.
